TRIGGER POINT OF THE WEEK – ILIOTIBIAL BAND

The ilitibial band is a thick myofascial condensation which gives rigidity and stability to the lateral lower extremity, resisting valgus forces. The Gluteus Maximus and Tensor Fascia Latae muscle both project fibers into the ITB. The Gluteus Maximus is one of the strongest muscles in the body and it generates a substantial force translated by the ITB to the knee. Trigger points in the ITB are often seen in running related issues

MUSCLE COMMENT

There are some marvelously florid trigger points in the middle superior of the ITB. Find the upper border of the ITB and roll upwards – you should feel a thin taut band of about 1cm diameter between the ITB and the lateral border of the vastus lateralis. Treating this band with a needle (IMS) produces some of the biggest possible twitch response.

How do you treat trigger these trigger points? We’d be delighted if you want to share your own best practice.
